STAYING IN THE GAME

In the South, excitement fills the air as children head back to school, temperatures begin to drop, and Friday night football begins. Fall brings other sports such as soccer, cheerleading, volleyball and dance. Unfortunately, injuries are a part of every sport, and the emphasis on player safety is often overlooked.

Capital Ortho, formerly Capital Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center, is proud to serve our community and area high schools by providing on-site medical care with our athletic trainers and physicians. These providers work hard to ensure the student-athletes have the best chance at a healthy season.

“This coming fall season, it is especially important to educate parents, coaches and athletes on common sports injuries such as contact head injuries, heat-related illness, overuse injuries and common bumps and bruises. Often early recognition and intervention can be vitally important in treating potentially serious conditions such as concussions, dehydration and heat exhaustion,” said Dr. Tal Hendrix, a sports medicine and shoulder specialist at Capital Ortho.

He went on to say, “As baseball season draws to an end, overuse injuries, particularly in throwers, become more prevalent. With the rise in adolescent shoulder and elbow injuries, it is increasingly apparent that taking time away from a throwing sport is important for long-term success.”

There are nine fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons at Capital Ortho, five of whom are board certified in sports medicine. Capital Ortho provides the highest level of treatment for athletes allowing them to return to their sport as quickly and safely as possible.

“Part of what I enjoy about sports medicine is helping our patients return to the sport they love,” said Hendrix.

With a new state-of-the-art facility set to open this fall, Capital Ortho is taking the lead in the community to provide unparalleled access to care for patients and athletes. Capital Ortho’s new home will allow for efficient, comprehensive patient care. This new Flowood location will offer a full-service outpatient surgery center and an on-site physical therapy clinic. The new Flowood location is right off of the Medical Parkway at 104 Burney Drive.

In addition to Flowood, Capital Ortho also has a clinic in Madison and offers satellite clinics in Kosciusko, Forest, Hazlehurst and Magee. Every Saturday at 8 a.m. throughout the fall, Capital Ortho offers a walk-in sports injury clinic at their Madison location.

They also offer same-day appointment availability during the week. Many people do not realize that no referral is necessary to schedule an appointment. For more information about Capital Ortho or to schedule an appointment, visit capitalortho.com or call 601-987-8200.
