Palladian Consign & Design—

Second Hand but First Rate

Kay Fagan and Linda Harjes are two of the best reasons to get to know Palladian! Talented ladies who can help you find a bargain and point you in the right direction for an overall design goal.

Kay McHarg Fagan is quick to tell you that her store does not pretend to sell antiques. In an almost self-deprecating way, she says, “I sell used furniture.” That description completely understates and misrepresents the treasure trove of unique tables, chests, sofas, chairs, desks, lamps, light fixtures, rugs, china, crystal, porcelain, and more that fill her retail spot at 637 Highway 51 North in Ridgeland.

Almost everything there carries a brand name that falls into the high-end category—Hickory, Sherrill, Pennsylvania House, Henkel Harris, Henredon, and more. I’ve even spied Waterford crystal glassware and a Schonbek crystal chandelier on occasion.

There are a lot of traditional pieces here, well made with lines that don’t ever go out of style. If your tastes no longer run toward the dark woods, a creative eye can see how a little distressing or chalk paint can achieve an updated look without breaking a budget.

Palladian is not your everyday consignment shop. For one thing, there are no haphazard aisles of random items reminiscent of a thrift shop. Kay, who clearly has a knack for design, has arranged inventory in an attractive series of vignettes that give a shopper a realistic picture of how a particular piece might look in a home setting.

Because of the quality of merchandise at Palladian, the turnover is usually quick. They really don’t have to solicit because beautiful things pretty much come to them. Whether downsizing, renovating, moving to a first apartment, or just a yen to change a few pieces, Palladian is a place you need to discover if you have not! Palladian also loves hosting estate sales, so just keep that in mind!

The customer who sells through Palladian keeps 50% of the sales price of their items. Consignment could not be easier. Take a picture of the item you would like to sell. Email it or just run by the store to see if it might have a future at Palladian.

Kay, whose earlier careers included speech therapist and Baptist preacher’s wife, began to help an interior designer friend in Amory about 20 years ago. She discovered she loved it and was really a natural at it. When she moved to Jackson years later, she worked a while with local designer Ruth McMillin.

Palladian has been a blessing that “fell in her lap” five years ago, and she says she has loved every single day she has been able to work with her staff: Linda Harjes, Joanie Allen, and her own daughter, Courtney Fagan Yancy. Judging by the comments on the Palladian Facebook page, a very loyal clientele make it a regular stop for shopping and maintaining a friendship with the staff.

Palladian is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
